I've been looking for a decent free groupware application.
Unfortunately, most of them are not finished or just does not do what i
am expecting to accomplish. As an individual trying to put up a small
business in partner with offshore resources, it's just very important
to use a tool that is ready for collaboration. A web-based tool
for project / task management is a primary tool for managing potential
projects. Tools like dotProject, PhProjekt, and more.groupware are just
some of the open source initiatives out there.
dotProject.net
dotProject is a PHP web-based project management framework that
includes modules for companies, projects, tasks (with Gantt charts),
forums, files, calendar, contacts, tickets/helpdesk, multi-language
support, user/module permissions and themes.
Features Include:
- User Management
- Email based trouble Ticket System, (Integrated voxel.net's ticketsmith)
- Client/Company Management
- Project listings
- Hierarchical Task List
- File Repository
- Contact List
- Calendar
- Discussion Forum
- Resource Based Permissions

Project Management Feature:
The project management feature is well implemented. It defines the
stages of your project on tabs. What I also liked about it that each
project can be viewed on a gantt chart. The missing peace here is
resource management. If you have a large project and a small resource,
you wouldn't know if the resource is overloaded. The task will be
overlapping. Yes it's fine that the tool can manage the project, but
what good does it do if there's no resource management. The project
management will just turn into a disaster. I asked them about resource management and they told me that it's on
the roadmap. I guess I just have to wait for now.
There is also some issue as well with the user rights. For example, a
resource can update the status of the project even though the rights
are properly configured.
Well, after finding these two main issues. I didn't waste my time
looking at the other features. I will just wait for the next release.

nice review Written by ross on 2005-03-06 23:17:04 nice review, let me know when you find a good one. | Version 2.01? Written by Guest on 2005-05-02 17:03:27 This is worth another look. The permissions issue has been resolved with PHPGACL integration. The resource management issue is not resolved (farther up the roadmap) but if you're willing to manually manage task durations to accomodate resource issues, you might be very impressed with dotProject 2.01. Take another look. |
