If you are techie, I know you have used at least one open source
application. Today, most companies are giving away their codes to the
open source community. This just proves that, through open source,
products are completed faster without sacrificing quality. Take a look
for example Mozilla Firefox. If IE's current version is really the
last, it will be crushed as how it crushed Netscape on the beginning of the browser war.
Let's take for example a CMS or content management system. When I did
my research, I discovered about 15 to 20 open source CMS. But, of
course it's up to the user which is best for them. And I can say most
of them are good depending on how the user will use it. Honestly, I
just discovered this kind of tools just a year ago. Before, I use
create my
own HTML and JSP just to create a website. Today, you don't even have
to code the whole thing. Just design your template and look for plugins
that do your business. Or you can develop your own plugins if what you
need does not exist. Majority of these tools are written in PHP which is
pretty easy to develop. PHP is the
newest language for web application development.
Aside from CMS, there a couple of CRM tools. If you are familiar with
SAP, this is the kind of tool that companies pay for millions of
dollars. And I just can't believe that several open source are
existing. It may not be as par as what SAP does, but it surely does it
for small to medium businesses. There are also tools for project
management. You don't need to buy Microsoft Project because there are several
web-based systems like dotProject or PHProjekt. Some of these systems
are not yet completed, but they are already usable for task management.
Certainly, open source open the doors for entrepreneurs who wants to
use collaborative technology but can't afford SAP or Microsoft tools.
With the
increasing developers with passion for open source, one day software will all
just be free to use. I guess this explains why some companies are
lobbying for software patents. They are trying to protect their
businesses. Well, I would just say goodluck to them.
